If you are a lover of walks and waffles then this blog post is for you.
waffle walks route and pictures
Personally I can wolf a waffle anyday, anytime but if the sun’s shining and Hathersage is looking at its best then a waffle walk is the way forward. I’ve matched 3 of my favourite local walks to 3 different waffle options from Fritz’s menu. The further you go,the more waffle you earn.
Route 1(The Naked) – This little loop forms the core of the waffle walks and at the end of 2.5 miles you will have earned yourself a guilt free Naked- a freshly baked Liege waffle with a swirl of cream and a glug of Canadian maple syrup for modesty. This walk is a real pleaser, not too long and great for stretching the legs and getting some fresh air (naked striding entirely optional). You’ll begin by climbing up the beech woods behind the Sheffield road before emerging onto the moor by Scraperlow Hall. From here you will have great views of Higger Tor and Stanage Edge in the distance. There are also some stunning views of the village once you have crossed over the dale and climbed up the dead caravan track towards Toothill farm. As you come down into the village can also take an optional detour passing through the churchyard to give a wave to Little John.
Route 2 (The fully clothed waffle) – An extension of “the naked” , this route takes you up beyond Toot hill farm onto Cattis-side Moor and along to North Lees Hall. A little bit more climbing but for this you’ll have earned yourself a fully clothed waffle with a choice of 3 tasty toppings. The views from the top of moor are pretty impressive, Stanage looks beautiful to your right and the valley is opened up down to your left. You can also dream of Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester as your pass by North Lees hall (The inspiration for Thornfield hall in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre). Be sure to give a good old snort to the pigs as you pass by Cowclose farm on your way back into the village, although don’t mention the waffles, they’re sure to be jealous.
Route 3 (The Double) This 5 miler is a great one if you feel like making a full morning or afternoon of it. For scaling the heights of Stanage edge and exploring the hidden treasure of Papermill dam you will be deserving of… a DOUBLE (a grand stack of 2 waffles smothered in your choice of toppings.) While you’re walking along Stanage be sure to go and explore Robin Hood’s cave and admire the views from the archer’s grand balcony (A real treat for those who know where to find it). Pause a while at Paper Mill dam, dip if you dare or just soak up the serenity before making a beeline past Brookfield manor towards the waffle mecca.
No time or not in the mood then take route 4. Open your front door, walk or even drive down and treat yourself to whatever you fancy. Go wild and request one of every waffle on the menu (especially if it’s the weekend). Why not? You could even request your dog to push you to the club for your waffle…
