HSC W.L.T. Eat / Sheffield

Here at the Club, we’re lucky enough to have the best of both worlds – the gorgeous, peaceful surrounds of the Peak District, with the bustling and multicultural city of Sheffield just a short journey away. Sheffield is a great spot for foodie treats from all over the world, and Club staff are often found comparing notes on their favourite new spots. Here are a few places we’ve frequented recently – they come highly recommended.  If you’re looking for some great places to go when we’re closed for our break (February 18th – March 13th) then how about trying..

 Akentannos – http://akentannos.co.uk

One for a gorgeous treat, this authentic Sardinian restaurant is nestled on vibrant Sharrow Vale Road. Owners Mario and Giovanna serve up slow, intense soul food from this untamed Mediterranean island. Sardinian people have a longer life expectancy than the global average, a feat that’s largely put down to their collective penchant for Cannonau red wine (packed with antioxidants) and Pecorino Sardo cheese (plenty of omega-3). We recommend tucking in to these heartily at Akentannos, and prefacing it with a selection from the range of fresh pasta dishes or simply prepared, high quality fresh meats.

 Cutlery Works – https://cutleryworks.co.uk

Post-industrial Kelham Island was crowned the UK’s best neighbourhood in the 2018 Urbanism Awards, and with all the exciting development that’s taken place there over the past few years it’s not hard to see why. Cutlery Works is a vast foodhall-style space in a converted cutlery works (of course), with a huge range of cuisines available from Sheffield’s most dynamic food vendors. Take your pick of treats like Five Rivers Vietnamese, quality meat, fish and selected wines from Fin and Bone, Gravy Train poutine, vegan Shed and south Indian street food MA-ba (to name just a few!). Refreshments are provided by Booze Hound craft beer bar and Foundry Roastery, and sweet treats are on offer from the likes of Elly Joy (froconut ice cream) and Bullion’s Chocolate Cafe. Unmissable!

 Saigon 68 – http://www.saigon68.co.uk

Vietnamese cuisine is fragrant, hearty and even feels pretty healthy – making a slap-up meal at Saigon 68 on London Road a must if you’re in the area. We recommend warming up with a pint at the Cremorne next door, or the Beer Engine a short walk away, before trying to get a window table for ultimate people-watching. The menu is extensive and will likely feature something for everyone – the bowls of umami, herby phonoodle soup are big enough to swim in (maybe), and the fresh rice paper summer rolls are great dipped in sweet chilli or fish sauce. This is a fairly no-frills kind of place but it’s always buzzing, and service is friendly and quick. You’ll leave absolutely stuffed.

JH Mann, 261 Sharrow Vale Road. Tel: 0114 268 2225

This quality fishmongers is identifiable amongst the fronts of Sharrow Vale Road by its intricate, colourful hand-painted facade. After serving cold meals for a while, the owners decided to go into serving hot lunches between 11-3 – and at the weekends this place gets packed out. Show up, choose your fresh fish from the counter, and the lads will suggest some great accompaniments to go with it. They charge shop prices rather than restaurant prices, so a meal for two can be had for an astonishingly low price. The fresh mackerel with lentil dal is a really rich treat – perfect with a half bottle of white from Starmore Boss next door. Don’t forget to take home some of the freshest fish going whilst you’re there – and even oysters for just a quid each.

Picture House Social – http://picture-house-social.com

One of Sheffield’s coolest bars and gig spaces, PHS also specialises in high-octane ping-pong tournaments and mouth-watering pizza. On a Monday, all pizzas are 2-4-1, and they feature stripped-back, high quality toppings, sourced directly from Italy. The dough is proved for at least 36 hours, lending a perfectly light but substantial texture. The toppings can vary, with seasonal specials too, but Club faves are the anchovy and salsa verde, and the straight-up pepperoni. Accompaniments like arancini stuffed rice balls, crisp potato wedges and fresh artichoke salad are also available for just a few quid, meaning you can save some pennies for an extra cocktail from their extensive bar menu. Kick back, listen to some great tunes and watch the bright young things go about their business.
