Monologues – performance and film

Exploring stories in new ways

At Couth & Würstlin, we’re exploring how personal stories can find new life online. These short monologues are simple but carefully crafted experiments to bring writing to voice and screen, working in ways that feel fresh, yet grounded.

What to Expect

Working closely with new talent performers, we create monologues that play with form and chance. From triptychs that reveal shifting meanings through multiple character viewpoints, to using dice rolls or fortune tellers to randomise the order, these pieces invite playful, non-linear ways to experience stories.

One series looks at common threads in near-death experiences told by very different voices but with surprising connections. Another explores the perspectives of people connected to a block of apartments, each distancing themselves from a troubling event, while unknowingly each playing a small part.

While the work is experimental, it’s rooted in a genuine curiosity about how stories move beyond the page.

Why We’re Doing This

This work builds on past experiences working with Channel 4 and the BBC which explored the creative potential for digital platforms to open new doors for storytelling. We want to continue discovering what online spaces can offer.

  • How does meaning change when writing becomes performance on screen?
  • What possibilities arise when stories are unruly, fragmented, or chosen by chance?
  • How can we allow the audience to collaborate in the reshaping of storytelling?

Our Approach

Writing shapes itself around voice and timing, letting rhythm, breath, and silence lead. Rehearsals are a space to listen, adjust, and see how movement and stillness affect the story.

Filming uses close, minimal production to keep intimacy. The form stays flexible, allowing pieces to be rearranged, repeated, or experienced unexpectedly.

Collaboration

We work in close partnership with performers and filmmakers, sharing ideas and testing what’s possible together. All pieces are made for online spaces, where digital storytelling continues to surprise and evolve.

The Outcome

This project is an ongoing journey, an attempt to find new ways to bring writing, performance, and film together. It builds on what we’ve learned but remains open to wherever these stories want to go next.
