I feel as though this activity has been planned with me especially in mind. It’s so brilliant, I have a little tear in my eye.
Want great food? Want a really authentic local experience? Love to tap into the wisdom, knowledge and great sense of humour of elderly community members? I bring you ‘Cooking with Grannies of the Sea’. A community tourism project in the old fishing village of Trafaria on the Costa da Caparica near Lisbon where your hosts and cookery teachers are older ladies in the community.
The beaches of the Costa da Caparica are beautiful; wide, wind-swept expanses of sand, protected from the mainland by small dunes. Trafaria itself is a pretty ramshackle old fishing town that you reach by ferry from Lisbon. A short walk along the beach bring you to the community centre and it’s here you join the Grannies for a traditional cooking lesson, a local tipple or two and a natter. No Portuguese required as The Grannies will demonstrate all you need to know and smiling, mime and laughter goes a long way.
